Synopsis If paper umbrellas can be elevated from articles for daily use into art, so can old houses. With a paper umbrella, a song and the streets of Tainan City, director Maurice Lai makes us reflect on urban development. Over four centuries, Tainan City was subjected to multicultural influences. Now, for the past 20 years, it has been at the crossroads of a transition from old to new. How much of the ancient capital should be preserved? How much should be demolished for the sake of development? The film looks back and examines past values. By choosing the filming locations from an architectural and humanistic perspective, Tainan architect Tsai Chiang Kuo Chi endows the work with richer layers of meaning and colours it with warmth and affection.

Remarks shared after Festival

“Attending Festival de Cannes is definitely a dream for any filmmaker. Thanks to the support of NAE, not only did I get to see in person the God of Movies – Steven Spielberg, I also learnt something crucial through this exchange: Although there are thousands of filmmakers that do better than me, I know now that my own work lives up to international standards.”

“Udine is a small town in Northern Italy. But with its passion towards films, Udine Far East Film Festival becomes one of the most valued Asian Film Festival in Europe. In the festival, audience is the judge. Commercial films are put forward, with artistic films for enjoyment. Staff and volunteers are very kind and helpful. It’s so glad to meet a Italian translator who speaks Cantonese!”
